How the Insurance in the US Army works:
Generally, if an individual serves in the US army for 20 years, he/she is given 50% of his salary for the rest of his life. For those on active duty, the military allows for retirement at age 40, which means that pension will be collected for a considerably long time if one is able to stick around long enough for retirement. Admittedly, it is not easy to stick around till pension in the army. This is because of the stressful nature of the job, the pressure on families and the risk involved in the job. In effect, Just 18% of men in active duty stick around long enough for their pension.
There are basically two ways of going about retirement in the army;
- the first option is to receive a defined benefit for the rest of your life. This is calculated using the soldier’s highest basic salary for 3 years as well as the number of years he was in service to the United States of America.
- The second option is receiving a lump sum of money which is deducted from the to-be-spread money in option 1.
Many question why the U.S has such a lucrative pension plan for the servicemen. The truth is that this pension salary in the army is to ensure that once a serviceman serves 10 years, the desire to quit becomes less because there will be something to look forward to receiving at the end of the service (20 years). Experience counts in the army and the pension ensures people stay in the army.
